I really like your idea, the only thing I can't chum up with is the grandfather part.. being related to an important character from the games just screams "Mary Sue!" at me. I'd prefer if you changed it to him being your idol. Maybe he could be your mentor who you asked about Fire Pokemon a lot? Anyway, I'm gonna wait for the others to voice their opinions.
